His blue eyes narrowed as he frowned back down into her stunned face. Was he reading her troubled and very vulnerable mind? Already planning a ruthless seduction, perhaps?

The possibility was perversely delicious to think about, but Abby knew that such a reality would be a disaster. She knew who would be the one who ended up getting hurt, and it wouldn't be Mr Hyde.

'Enough of that for now,' Ann interrupted. 'There's just so much spontaneous passion I can stand on an empty stomach. I'll let you continue canoodling after I've had a couple of G and Ts.'

'We'll await your permission with bated breath,' Ethan said with another rueful glance down at Abby. 'Lead on, Henry. I think I could do with a drink myself.'

Me, too, Abby agreed. Alcohol had a tendency to make her aggressive and sarcastic, not at all the mellow you-can-do-anything-you-like-with-me type of female most men hoped for when they plied their partner with drink. Dillon had taken some time to realise that he did much better with chocolates and compliments than wine.

Not that Abby seriously thought that Ethan was interested in getting her drunk, or in seducing her. He was just being his usual supercilious self, trying to niggle her. It was a continuation of the coldly competitive game of one-upmanship they'd played with each other right from the first day.

'Straight ahead,' Henry directed, ushering Ann towards the open doorway directly opposite the top of the stairs.

The first room they entered contained a large centrally located bar and a polished wooden rectangular construction with a black leather top and a myriad of matching stools anchored to the red carpet on steel poles.

The rest of the large room was filled with groupings of armchairs and tables, most of which were occupied. A smoke haze filled the air, which caused Ann immediately to wrinkle her nose.

'Clearly this is the smoking section,' she said. 'But I see an archway over there and clear air in the distance. Come on. Let's find our pure lungs a more suitable breathing place for the next hour.'

Abby couldn't help but notice the way Ethan looked around as they followed Ann and Henry through the smoke-filled room, his searching gaze checking out every group of people, including those sitting and standing at the bar. Was he looking for Vanessa? she wondered. And felt an irritating pang of jealousy.

Several of the men greeted him by name, their women companions invariably looking him up and down—all with interest, some with outright hunger. Abby found herself glaring back at these with open hostility. She even linked arms with him at one stage, staking her pretend possession. It brought a sour glance from Ethan and a muttered, 'Don't overdo it.'

'You started it,' she returned airily. 'You should never have kissed me like that. I was overcome.'

'I did notice you were stunned into silence for a second or two.'

'Shock does rather have that effect on one.'

'Hopefully, next time I kiss you you won't look quite so much like a stunned mullet.
